Introduction
Have you ever wanted to go out and have a great time in Tel-Aviv, but everything was so expensive? Bars offer amazing deals during happy hour and you want to enjoy it, but there are so many bars to choose from that you just get lost in all that information and usually end up going to the same bar like always. Tipsy TLV shows you all the bars in your area with their amazing happy hour deals in real time, helping you narrow down the options, so you can easily find the best happy hour for you.

The challenge
Creating a mobile app that will:
- Display all the happy hour deals in real time
- Present information about the bar and your friends' reviews
- Allow you to filter and narrow down the options
- Help you decide which bar to go out to
- Direct you to the bar
User research
I interviewed potential users to understand their pains and needs better.
I asked the following questions:
I asked the following questions:
- How do you choose which bar to go out to?
- Do you choose a place in advance?
- Where do you find the information about happy hour deals?
- Do you go out during the happy hour time?
- What information is important to you when choosing a bar to go out to?
- Would you use an app that shows you all the happy hour deals in one place?
- What do you think this app needs to include?
I go out to bars that are near to where I live. |
My friends tell me about amazing happy hour deals. |
I want to see the bar's rating and read the reviews. |
Results summary:
- 100% of the users said that location is the number one factor when choosing a bar to go out to.
- The users search for the happy hour deals in various ways: facebook, google, bar’s website, friend’s recommendations and some users just remember the deals at places they have been before.
- Other factors that were important to the users were:
- Food and drink menus
- Happy hour deal and hours
- The bar’s rating
- Prices
Pain points
- Going out, drinking and eating at bars in Tel-Aviv is expensive.
- Users end up going out to the same bars all the time.
- The information about happy hour deals doesn’t all appear in one place.
- The users need help narrowing down the options according to their search.
Gain points
- The users can find the best deals that suit them (according to: location, happy hour deal and hours, prices, no smoking areas…).
- The users will be exposed to other and new bars.
User flow
Personas
I choose two personas for this project. Each one has different goals, motivation and pains. I gave each persona a realistic scenario, that the user might have when using the app.
Wireframes
Design changes as result of user testing
Testing a prototype of the app with users in early stages, allowed me to identify areas that could be improved for a better user experience.
Before
In the map view, the users needed to click on the different bars in order to view their details, instead of having all that information already displayed. The user needed to click over and over again each time to view the bar's details. |
After
The map view will include scrollable cards of the bars. The bar that appears in the middle card will be highlighted in the map by a “selected location” icon. The users can scroll through the cards or click on a specific bar to view it’s details. |
Design
Scenario 1
Ariel is going out tonight with her friends. She wants to choose a 5 star bar near her home with a 1+1 on drinks happy hour deal.
Let's see more details
Ariel views photos of the bar, general details (such as: location, opening hours, the bar's menu and website), which of her friends visited the bar, and customers rating and reviews of the place. She can also add the bar to her favorites or share with friends. When she is sure this is the place she wants to go out to, she chooses the "Take me there" button for directions to the place. |
Scenario 2
Mike has a date with Daniella in an hour. Daniella lives in a different part of Tel-Aviv, that Mike doesn’t know very well. He wants them to go out to a cool bar with great vibes, but doesn’t know which bar to choose.
Final thoughts
I’ve started this project, because it is an app that I would love to have and use. Each time I go out with friends the question of “Where should we go? Which bar has the best happy hour deal?” comes up. Usually we end up going to the same bar that’s near by. Some people like to go to the same bar all the time, some want to try new places and some don’t really care where they go out, as long as it’s close by. When designing this app I tried to answer as many of the frustrations as possible.
Additional ideas
Additional ideas
- Instead of a new app, this can also be an add-on for google maps, Trip Advisor or Rest.
- The app can recommend bars according to your history, searches and favourites.
- In the map view, different icons can be used for cocktail bars, wine bars and beer bars.
- Users can update information about the bar in real time: Is the bar crowded or empty? What kind of vibes does the bar have? They can check-in so their friends will know that they are there right now.
- A Gett or Moovit button can be added inside the app, allowing the user to arrive and return home with no worries.
